Frequently Asked Questions: Bonavita Brewers

Q:  Water from the tank is leaking from the bottom of the brewer and no water is going into the filter/carafe. What should I do? 

A:  Please complete the warranty claim form to receive a replacement. 

 

Q:  Is the brewer made in China?

A:  Yes, while the brewers are assembled in China, we would not consider them Chinese coffee makers like those commonly found in US retail. The 8-cup brewers are SCAA certified in the US and its European version is certified in Europe by similar coffee industry associations. 

 

Q:  How often should I descale my Bonavita brewer?

A:  We recommend descaling the brewer at least once every 100 uses, using Dezcal, Full Circle, or a similar descaling product. If you have hard water, descaling more often is recommended. If your brewer is steaming more than usual, it is time to descale. We do not recommend using vinegar to descale due to the residual odor. 

 

Q:  Is the plastic BPA-Free?

A:  Yes, all plastic components are BPA-Free.

 

Q:  Why is brewing taking longer than the recommended 6 minutes?

A:  It depends on where you are located. Below are a few tips that may help you understand your particular situation:

  • 6 minutes is measured at 120V. In California and the North East your line voltage can be as low as 104V.
  • The lower the voltage the slower the brew.
  • Count total time, beginning when the water first comes out of the shower head, not when you turn on the switch. It can take up to 12 seconds for the heating element to heat the water enough to begin the brew cycle and release water from the shower head. 
  • If lower voltage is not the case, it might be time to descale the brewer. If the issue is not resolved by descaling, please complete the warranty claim form

 

Q:  What is the heating element made of?

A:  The heating element is made of copper encased in aluminum and the tubing is made of aluminum, similar to espresso machines. 

 

Q:  Why is the thermal carafe leaking?

A:  The vacuum seal is likely damaged. Please complete the warranty claim form for a replacement.

 

Q:  Why is water getting trapped in the thermal carafe?

A:  It is likely the seal is damaged. Please complete the warranty claim form for a replacement. 

 

Q:  The glass lining inside the thermal carafe shattered while sitting on the drying rack. What happened?

A:  Instances such as strong pressure from a cleaning brush, dropping it in the sink while cleaning, or placing it down hard on the counter can cause a small crack which can get bigger as it's exposed to the temperature differential of brewing and cleaning, then popping the vacuum seal and shattering the glass. Please complete the warranty claim form to receive a replacement carafe.  

 

Q:  Why is the coffee not hot?

A:  The Bonavita coffee brewer is designed to brew a full pot of coffee at 195-205°F. Once coffee comes in contact with air, the temperature will decrease significantly. Immediately after brewing a full pot, the temperature in the carafe is typically 175-185°F. Brewing a smaller batch or brewing at higher elevations may result in a lower temperature. 

 

Q:  Are spare parts available?

A:  Replacement lids and carafes are available for purchase through Espresso Supply. If you cannot locate the part you need, please email us at customersupport@bonavitaworld.com.  

 

Q:  What type of plastic is the water chamber made of?

A:  The tank material is PBA free Polycarbonate.

 

Q:  What kind of filters do you recommend for the 1800 and 1500 series brewers?

A:  #4 Melitta Super Premium Flavor Enhancing Coffee Cone. 

 

Q:  What kind of filters do you recommend for the 1900 series brewers?

A:  Melitta 8-12 cup basket filters. 

 

Q:  Can I use a reusable filter with my brewer?

A:  Yes, we recommend using the Capresso CoffeeTEAM model #751.09 filter with the BV1900 series brewers. Any #4 filter should work well with other models of Bonavita brewers. 

 

Q:  What is the difference between the different coffee brewers?

A:  Please see below for each brewer's specifications:

Q:  Why isn't the water coming out of all of the holes in the shower head?

A:  To ensure the shower head is working as designed, please remove the tank lid and shower head, then replace the shower head, ensuring that it is pressed down as far as possible. Also ensure the brewer is placed on a completely flat surface. For a demonstration using the 1800 series brewer, please watch this video by Roastmasters Coffee: 1800 series demo.

Please Note: The shower head is designed to allow an even distribution of water. However, the brewer is not pressurized, so the amount of water brewing through each hole is not regulated. the holes located in the center of the shower head usually distribute throughout the brew cycle and the outside holes alternate. The water will cover the entire filter basket and rise slightly above the grounds, allowing for an even extraction.

 

Q:  Why does my brewer have a strong plastic taste/smell, even after several uses?

A:  This is normal for newly manufactured plastic. If it remains after a few uses, please try running Full Circle Coffee Machine Cleaner through the brewer. If this doesn't remove the smell/taste, we will replace the brewer.    

 

Q:  Why does the brewer stop before all of the water has gone through?

A:  Please descale with Full Circle or Dezcal descaling powder. If this doesn't resolve the issue, please complete the warranty claim form to receive a replacement. 

 

Q:  Can I use a thermal carafe with my BV1800 coffee brewer?

A:  No, thermal carafes are not compatible with a heating plate. 

 

Q:  Can I use a glass carafe with my thermal carafe coffee brewer?

A:  Yes, Double Walled Glass Carafes are available to purchase: BV61500CAD Bonavita 5-Cup Double Walled Glass Carafe  &  BV61900CAD Bonavita 8-Cup Double Walled Glass Carafe

 

Q:  Can I purchase a glass lined carafe?

A:  The glass lined carafe has been discontinued and is no longer available.
